MUSIC IN RONCESVALLES

The Collegiate church's special relationship with music goes back to ancient times. This can be seen in two chants and the 13th century prayer book that form part of the Treasure exhibited in the museum. Less beautiful, although with immense documentary and artistic importance, most of the Roncesvalles musical collection is kept in the archive as folders, loose papers and handwritten parchments. This is added to the 38 polyphony and Gregorian chants kept in the library. This makes a total of 884 compositions, mainly sacred art composed between the 16th and 18th centuries.

But music still comes across loud and clear in Roncesvalles both in the liturgy and in the many cultural and religious events held over the year where shows and concerts feature strongly on summer evenings.
